There was a time when planning for a trip or taking a vacation took months. Written requests for information for destinations were sent through the mail. Upon their arrival, they were sorted and scoured over before a decision was made. Then phone calls had to be made to hotels, airlines and rental car agencies to secure the best price. This entire procedure took a great deal of time, sometimes even months ahead.
Or, you could pull out that big yellow book and find someone to do all the work for you. They are called travel agents and they do all the leg work for you, delivering a packet of information with tickets and itinerary right before you leave for your trip. Of course they don't do this for you out of the kindness of their hearts, there is a fee involved.
Today, with access to the internet all that has changed. Travel agents are almost non-existent as their job functions can now be done by one who has a computer and a destination in mind. A whole vacation can be planned in a couple of hours and a few visits to several websites. No need for a travel agent or numerous phone calls to hotels, car rental agencies or airlines.
The internet may be evil, but it does do some things right. How convenient is it being able to look at all the hotel rooms available in a town or all the flights that will get you close to your destination or compare all the rental cars? It is very convenient and what's even better is that you can plan even more detailed events like dinner reservations and buy tickets for shows all online without even having to pick up the phone.
Most times, everything is up to date and you never have to call the places you are going to be going to, all you have to do is click the keyboard and mouse a few times and everything will be set to go. They will even e-mail confirmations and tickets and everything you need to make everything go smoothly on the trip. You have the freedom and flexibility to set everything up yourself.
